Lanterns

Candle and paper lanterns are used to dimly illuminate small areas and spaces. Candle lanterns have been found dating all the way back to ancient Asia. Since the lantern was first invented in 509 B.C., the concepts and materials used have varied from collapsible bamboo, rice paper, paper bags, or metal hoops covered with paper. The Asian Pagoda Candle Lantern was one of the first, and was built for monasteries and holy shrines. This lantern remains one of the most sacred objects in Asia. Decorative paper lanterns are often used during festivals and cultural celebrations such as the Chinese New Year, and paper lanterns in all colors, shapes, and sizes can be found all over the world. Using lanterns for the purpose of decoration has become a more recent practice, some lanterns have small individually cut out decorations and designs, where light can escape and create shadows and illuminations. Dutch mathematician and scientist Christiaan Huygens developed the original “Magic Lantern” in the late 1650s. This was the first lighting fixture made to create shadows and pictures. click here for full article...

personal statement

I was inspired to use candle holders as my theme because I found one on thingiverse on the first day of classes, and thought it was interesting and useful. I was originally going to make small animal models for my final project, but decided against this because I felt they had no use, other than to just look nice. I wanted to create something for my final project that had a more practical use, so I went back to making the candle holders. Each one has a different geometric shape on each side of the box. A difficulty that I ran into while making these was in the candle box with the circles on each side. The 3D printer has to print using support beams, and in the circular candle box, they were difficult to remove. This made the overall piece look a bit messy in comparison to the others and what you see on the screen before you actually print the object. In the future, this could be fixed by making the circles smaller, so there are larger gaps in between each one. The supports will still print, but if the object is less fragile, they will be much easier to remove.
